My wonderful RV: She's a 1994, 29 foot Fleetwood Tioga (class C). '94 sounds old but - and this is the reason I bought her - she's only got 41,000 miles. I removed the bed from the back and put in an office (desk, external hard drives underneath, wiring, big flat screen TV, two large dressers for additional storage). I sleep in the "cab-over", the part over top of the driver's/passenger's seats. It's quite comfortable and easy to get used to (my brother who was visiting slept up there comfortably and he's 6' 3"). The mattress is a Posturpedic memory foam, and is dreamy. I put on 6 brand new tires when I bought her (a year ago), so they have about 7k miles with another 4-6 years left on them. Changed all fluids (engine, radiator, transmission, etc) when I got her and have changed the oil 3 times since. She runs great and the engine has never given me any problems. And I replaced the hot water heater last month. Only problems I have encountered: - Lost pressure in the brakes due to a leak in Nova Scotia. Had it fixed. - Generator (supplies power when off the grid) needs carburetor cleaned, it just is so rarely used, but it’s an easy fix. I haven’t taken it in, I just don’t use it, and it could use a service check-up. - The ABS (anti-lock brakes) no longer operate (the anti-lock part). My brother (an ex-mechanic) says not to get it repaired as the older ABS technology actually made stopping distance longer (a bad thing). Newer ABS is fine, but not the early stuff. She stops fine and I've never experienced the brakes locking in an emergency stop so I don't worry about them. - Knocked the black water valve off (what a mess) when I drove where I probably shouldn't have been driving (dirt roads are ok, but really big pot holes aren't). Replaced with new Black & Grey valves. - Minor cosmetics that I'm too lazy to fix. -I use the shower for storage, and blocked off the pipes. She's got all the basic RV stuff: - 3 burner stove with hood - Oven - Microwave - Refrigerator/Freezer (auto switches between gas and electric) - Freshwater tank (25-30 gallon) -Fully efficient head - Grey and Black water tanks - Dinette that converts into a bed - Sofa that converts into a bed - Plenty of storage in overhead cabinets Since I've had her, I've added: - Pseudo hardwood floors (much easier to clean than the old carpet). This is a laminate flooring but looks great. - 26" LCD flat screen TV (Samsung) -18” LCD flat screen TV (Samsung) - New TV antenna -JVC media player and handsfree speaker - 1750 watt power inverter (to run your electronics off your batteries) - 40 watt fast deep cycle battery charger - Towing package (to tow a vehicle behind) - Tow bar, cables, wires, connections. - Brake Buddy (to stop your tow vehicle when you stop) If I was going to keep her, I'd get one 120 watt solar panel. I wasn't sure how much boondocking I'd do when I bought her, but now I realize it would be worth it and more eco-friendly. I say one panel because you can always add more and I don't use a lot of power when I'm off the grid (computer mostly). It would be a good idea of add two deep cycle Marine batteries if you were serious about boondocking, but not completely necessary. I’ve also looked into vehicle wraps to update the exterior but could never settle on a company. I'm figuring $12,500 for her is fair (low mileage and known reliability vs age). The title is clean. All in all, the RV's a great vehicle. You know she's reliable and functional (peace of mind) because I've been living and traveling in her for a year. She's ideal for a single person or couple who want to full-time it and don't want to spend a bunch of money to try out this way of living. This was my exact situation. If you end up liking the lifestyle, then either keep it, or upgrade in a year or so. Buying used at first means you can almost guarantee getting your money back out when you upgrade (vs. new when you lose about 40% as you drive it off the lot).
