Up for sale is this 1991 Dodge Xplorer Class A motor home. Because of a mistake with the VIN number, DMV thinks it is a 1989, which makes for cheaper registration and insurance, but the driver’s door plate clearly states that it’s a 1991. It is current on its registration, and just passed smog in September 2013.
The original owner kept meticulous records and it comes with all of the original manuals and schematics. We bought it from the second owner who had been living in it (up on jacks, no damage to the tires) for ten years. He regularly started it, but it did not move.
We have done over $12K in work to this vehicle. Now, to tell you all the things that we have done to this vehicle…. Are you ready?
· New Engine: It has a 8 Cylinder Dodge (360?) engine with less than 500 miles on it
· Rebuilt generator with a new inverter. It has less than 5 hours running time
· Rebuilt Transmission
· New Master Brake Cylinder and Boosters
· Rebuilt suspension
· New Roof A/C Unit that was started to test, but has never been used
· New Refrigerator that was started to test, but has never been run. It will run on propane or electric and can be easily customized by adding panels or plexiglass
· New Cooktop and Oven. We upgraded from a simple cooktop, and had to replace the cabinet to accommodate the new oven. The cabinet was built by a local cabinet shop out of cherry.
· Brand New Microwave
· New laminate on the counter, dining table, and the side table.
· New sink and faucet.
· New Battery Isolator
· New under-cabinet CD player in bedroom
· New CD/ MP3 access player in dash that plays throughout the vehicle
· Back-Up Camera
· Cabin Battery was bought in 2007 and I think has a 10 year warranty
· Engine Battery was bought in 2012
· Exhaust system has been repaired
· Battery disconnects are installed on both batteries
Addition things you should know about…
· This RV will sleep up to 5 people. There is a full size bed in the back that will sleep 2 people, the dinette folds flat and will sleep 2, and the passenger seat can be folded flat and slept on.
· There is a full size spare tire under the back bumper
· A heavy duty extension cord for plugging the RV in at campgrounds
· It has the original hot water heater which has a special feature
This hot water heater heats water while you drive. This is not a standard feature, most RVs will only heat water while they are parked. It means that you can shower, do dishes, etc. as soon as you arrive!
· The propane tank is easy access near the front passenger tire.
· There is a full shower in the bathroom. Most RVs with showers use the entire bathroom as the shower and have a drain in the floor. This RV has a shower separate from the rest of the bathroom (someone could brush their teeth while another person showers).
· The cabin heater can be run on propane or electric
· There is TONS of storage. The entire space under the bed is a cabinet, there are several exterior storage bins, and the entire cabin is lined with overhead cabinets. There is also a large closet next to the bed.
· The driver and passenger seats have shoulder belts
· The rear passenger and all the dinette benches have lap belts (most dinettes don’t have any seatbelts)
· The body of the RV is very aerodynamic, which leads to great gas mileage.
Now for the not so great…
· The dash A/C and heater controller needs to be replaced
· The odometer does not function
· You need to keep at least 1/8 of a tank of gas. There may be an issue with an internal fuel pump inside the gas tank.
· The front grill needs new hardware to stay attached
· The internal floor lights stay on anytime there is power to the RV. We had the door switch replaced, which fixed it for a few weeks, but it stopped working. Might be an easy fix.
· The triangle wing window on the passenger side is cracked
· The tires have lots of tread, but they are at least 12 years old
· The driver’s seat belt is sticky
